A groundbreaking ceremony took place on the 29th of November 2022 in order to celebrate the beginning of the construction works of the initiative of the Italian Cooperation in Vietnam “New Sewage Collection and Treatment System of Tay Ninh City”. The ceremony, organized by the Provincial People’s Committee and the City People’s Committee of Tay Ninh, saw the participation of H.E. the Italian Ambassador Antonio Alessandro and of the Head of the Regional Office in Hanoi of the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation, Ms. Tiziana Fusco.

The Italian cooperation in Vietnam implements bilateral projects in sectors such as environment and natural disaster risk reduction, health, water resources management, urban drainage and water supply, and promotion of productivity and competitiveness of Vietnamese small and medium enterprises. Ongoing initiatives total funding is worth more than 110 million euro, co-financed by the Italian and Vietnamese governments, with an Italian contribution of approximately 90 million euro. Recognizing the impact on life standards of the Vietnamese population, and the substantial cross-sectorial benefits, more than half of the total funding of the Italian cooperation in the country has been allocated to water supply and sanitation infrastructures. The investment in the water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) sector amounts to a total of 66 million euro, with an Italian contribution of 49 million euro.

Italy has extensive experience in the WASH sector and is committed to promoting the regeneration of territories according to the principles of sustainability, inclusivity, and innovation. These are the main themes supporting Rome’s candidature to host the Universal Exposition 2030.

In order to respond to the rapid urbanization of Tay Ninh’s province, the Italian and Vietnamese authorities have recognized the urgent need to adequately manage the urban drainage and wastewater collection and treatment system, aiding the modernization process of the city of Tay Ninh and the improvement of its infrastructures and basic services.

The initiative, financed by the Italian cooperation with a soft loan of 9,700,000 euro, will contribute to improve the livelihoods of around 150,000 inhabitants of Tay Ninh city, enhancing the sanitary conditions of the population, reducing the transmission of infectious diseases, and mitigating the environmental impact caused by the rapid demographic growth which has characterized the urban area of Tay Ninh in recent years. The launch of the construction works for the wastewater treatment plant with a capacity of 5000 m3/day, carried out in collaboration with the Joint Venture Sideridraulic-HTC-OCI, will be followed by the incipit of civil works for the sewerage network for which bidding procedures to select the contractor are currently being finalized. With an extension of 21 km, the network will contribute to improve the urban drainage conditions, collecting and conveying rainwater and domestic wastewater to adequate disposal and mitigating the risks of floods in the city.

The start of the civil works is a success of the cooperation between Italy and Vietnam, thanks to the collaboration with the Provincial People’s Committee, the City People’s Committee, the Project Management Unit, and several departments of the municipality of Tay Ninh with the Embassy of Italy in Hanoi and the Regional Office in Hanoi of the Italian Agency for Cooperation to Development.

With the groundbreaking ceremony, Italy renews its support to Vietnam in a strategic partnership to achieve the targets set in the Socio-Economic Development Strategy (SEDS) 2021-2030 and the National Strategy for Environmental Protection (NSEP) until 2030.
