Port call of the Italian vessel “ITS MOROSINI” in Ho Chi Minh City (9-12 May 2023)

The Italian vessel “ITS Francesco Morosini” will make a port call in Ho Chi Minh City (Nha Rong harbour) on 9-12 May 2023 to strengthen cooperation exchanges between the Italian Navy and the Vietnam’s People Navy.

The Morosini visit takes place in the framework of a five-month naval campaign in the Indo-Pacific region, calling in fourteen countries (Gibuti, Singapore, Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Japan, Republic of Korea, Philippines, Bangladesh, India, Oman, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia) to promote naval diplomacy and maritime capacity building alongside with freedom of navigation and respect for the international law of the sea.

Entirely built in Italy at Fincantieri’s Integrated Shipyard and launched in 2020, it is named after the Doge of Venice who successfully commanded the Venetian Republic fleet in the XVII century in numerous naval battles against the Ottoman empire.

The Morosini is a Multipurpose Offshore Patrol Vessel of the Italian Navy designed with enhanced “dual use” features to perform both military tasks and civil protection activities.

With a length of 143 meters, a crew of 137 members and a maximum speed of 32 knots, it features a peculiar wave-piercing double bow, reminiscent of the rostrum of ancient Roman ships, an engineering solution optimizing the vessel’s performances in terms of hydrodynamics and maximum attainable speed, with a significant reduction in fuel consumption. Another innovative element is its naval cockpit which allows the management of sailing and air and naval operations by only two operators.

The combination of the newest technologies and extensive use of modularity concept make the Morosini an excellence of the Italian defence industry. For the occasion, representatives of leading Italian defence companies such as Elettronica, Fincantieri and Leonardo will accompany the visit.

The Morosini will arrive in Ho Chi Minh City on May 9 under the command of Commander Giovanni Monno. To mark the visit, a high-level delegation of the Italian Navy led by Rear Admiral Vincenzo Montanaro will be in Vietnam, paying courtesy calls to leaders of the Vietnam’s Navy Region 2 and 7 and leaders of the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee.

On May 10 the Ambassador of Italy to Vietnam, H.E. Antonio Alessandro, the Consul General of Italy in Ho Chi Minh City, Mr. Enrico Padula and the Commander of ITS Morosini, Giovanni Monno, will host a reception on board of the vessel at the presence of Vietnamese authorities.

The visit of the Morosini is one of the highlights of the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Italy and Vietnam. To celebrate this anniversary, from May 10 the vessel will host a photographic exhibition with images from the archives of the Italian News Agency ANSA and the Vietnam News Agency illustrating significant moments in the political, diplomatic, economic, scientific and cultural relations between the two Countries.

On May 11 the Morosini will host a seminar on “Yachting and Marinas: Italian experience for Vietnam’s new frontier” which will stimulate a discussion on a fast-developing segment of Vietnam’s economy where Italian know-how can offer a valuable contribution. Speakers include representatives of Confindustria Nautica (the Italian Marine Industry Association), Vietnamese experts and architect Marco Casamonti, the author of iconic projects such as the Kiss Bridge on Phu Quoc Island.

Other activities include a friendly football match on May 10 between the Morosini and the Vietnam’s Navy 2 Region as well as a visit of Ho Chi Minh City by the Italian crew members.

When leaving Vietnam on May 12, the Morosini will perform a joint passing exercise (PASSEX) with a Vietnamese Naval Ship.
