“The Indo-Pacific region is more central than ever in the global geopolitical scenario, given that tensions in the area are having repercussions on the rest of the world, up to the enlarged Mediterranean. It is therefore important to further deepen and consolidate relations on security and defence with Vietnam, which is an increasingly important player in maintaining stability in this region”, declared the Undersecretary of State for Defence, Hon. Matteo Perego di Cremnago, at the start of his mission in Hanoi (18-19 December 2024).

The official visit of Undersecretary Perego to Vietnam, which takes place at the invitation of the Vietnamese Government and on behalf of the Minister of Defence, Hon. Guido Crosetto , has also allowed for the exploration of new areas of cooperation and possible synergies between the Armed Forces of the two countries, also thanks to the institutional meetings with the Deputy Minister of Defence of Vietnam, Gen. Hoang Xuan Chien , and with the President of the Defence and Security Committee of the Vietnamese National Assembly, Gen. Le Tan Toi.

“The relations between Italy and Vietnam are based on a solid friendship and on the common interest in maintaining peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region. We will continue to work to strengthen not only bilateral ties, but also relations with a regional player of absolute importance such as ASEAN”, underlined the Undersecretary at the end of the talks, which took place in a cordial atmosphere of mutual trust.

The Vietnamese authorities expressed their appreciation for the activities conducted by Italy to protect peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific, such as the presence of the Italian Carrier Strike Group in the area, and hoped for a further boost to bilateral cooperation in the field of security and defence.

At the end of the first day of the mission, the Undersecretary met with representatives of the Italian companies participating in the Vietnam Defence Expo, which Perego visited on Thursday.

The Vietnam Defence Expo is the most important event of the Vietnamese Ministry of Defence, organized every two years with the aim of promoting dialogue between the various entities and companies operating in the sector. This year, Italy participates with a pavilion of 10 companies curated by the Italian Trade Agency and supported by the Federation of Italian Companies for Aerospace, Defence and Security (AIAD), as well as with independent stands of Leonardo and Flying Legend.

“In a rapidly changing operational scenario, characterized by the continuous advent of new technologies, dialogue and cooperation at the international level represent the best strategy to effectively address the challenges, both present and future, to defence and security”, declared Undersecretary Perego on the sidelines of the inauguration ceremony.

“The presence of the major Italian companies operating in the defence and security sector in this area, so strategic for international geopolitics, is a source of great pride, as well as a clear demonstration of how the excellence of our industrial fabric is appreciated and considered a point of reference throughout the world,” continued Perego during the visit to the exhibition area.

The Undersecretary subsequently met with the Minister of Defence of Vietnam, Gen. Phan Van Giang. They both reiterated the importance of dialogue and international cooperation in the current delicate historical phase.

“I am convinced that a deep, solid and long-lasting partnership between Italy and Vietnam represents a strategic resource to successfully address the challenges to peace and security that the future holds for us and that, being often common to all countries, require shared responses, as well as to protect peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific area, a region increasingly relevant for global balances” concluded Perego.
