How to register a death

The death certificate of an Italian citizen must always be registered in Italy at the Municipality of their last residence.
All administrative and legal procedures following a death—such as the declaration of succession, cadastral changes, withdrawal of funds from bank or postal accounts, pension payments, and so on—can only be initiated once the death has been officially registered.

The Consular Office of the Embassy of Italy in Hanoi forwards the death certificates of Italian citizens, including those not residing in the area, provided the death occurred within the jurisdiction of this Embassy.

The documents required to register the death in Italy are:

  • Death registration request form duly completed and signed by an interested family member (Italian or foreign) – see the “Forms” section;

  • Copy of the valid passport of the person requesting the registration (only the page with photo, personal data, and signature);

  • Death certificate legalized by the Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, accompanied by a translation into Italian (see list of translators);

  • Copy of the deceased’s passport (even if expired).

For certificates issued outside the consular jurisdiction of the Embassy of Italy in Hanoi, it is strongly recommended to verify the correctness of the documentation with the territorially competent Italian Diplomatic or Consular Representation.
