Italian citizens are hereby informed that, following the entry into force of DPCM no. 144 of 23/07/2016, which regulates the maintenance of the provisional civil union register, it is now possible to request the formation of a same-sex civil union at the competent Consular Office (based on the residence of either party), provided that at least one of the parties is an Italian citizen.
Furthermore, it is important to note that any Italian citizen who has entered into a same-sex marriage or civil union abroad (including those formed prior to the entry into force of Law No. 76/2016 on civil unions) is required to submit the relevant certificate to the competent Consular Office for registration in the Italian provisional register of civil unions.
Please note that Consular Offices are not competent to handle the dissolution of civil unions. Such procedures must be carried out through the Italian Municipality of residence of one of the parties, or the Municipality where the declaration of civil union was registered or transcribed.
