The Italian language

The Italian language

The best Italian Ambassadors in Vietnam are the many Vietnamese students who decide to study our language and who become extraordinary connecting elements between our cultures. General interest for our country, desire to learn more about specific aspects of Italian culture, business needs are just some of the reasons that lead boys and girls Vietnam to undertake a course of study that contemplates in its curriculum the Italian language.

The Embassy has stable and fruitful contacts with the universities where our language is taught and supports them both from a financial point of view, thanks to the contributions provided for by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and from an academic point of view, through the participation to seminars and events that aim at involving all students in the cultural activities of the Embassy.

In Hanoi there are four universities that offer Italian courses for a total of 17 professorships activated and about 700 students:
- Hanoi University: here there is a real Department of Italian and Italian degree leads to professions such as interpreter, translator or touristic guide;
- Thang Long University: Italian is an optional subject in the context of the different degree programs;
- Phuong Dong University: Italian is an optional subject in the context of the different degree programs;
- University of Languages and International Studies (ULIS): Italian has been taught since 1st October 2018 to those who are going to be the future teachers at the same university or other universities as well as high schools.

On the new web Portal of the Italian Language (https://www.linguaitaliana.esteri.it) you can find general information on learning Italian, which is the fourth most studied language worldwide by about 2 million students in 1.300 universities, 135 schools and 83 Italian Cultural Institutes. Asia is the second largest continent, after the Americas, to have recorded in the last year a substantial increase in the number of new students of the Italian language.

Another aspect on which the attention of the Embassy is focused is the translation of Italian works in Vietnamese language, for which the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation pays the contributions to the Vietnamese publishing houses.

Even in this way we can increase the knowledge of our culture by the Vietnamese public. The Embassy encourages, therefore, the publishers to select Italian works of interest and to present a plan for their translation.

Every year the Italian Ministry of Culture awards some prizes for the translation of Italian texts, called "National Awards for Translation", divided into major (10.000 EUR) and special (8.500 EUR). You can also consult some texts in Italian language at the Library "Carlo Urbani" located on the first floor of Casa Italia.
Carlo Urbani was a doctor and a microbiologist who in 2003 gave his life for the research on the epidemic of SARS: thanks to its in-depth studies and his sacrifice, Vietnam has been able to isolate the pathogen virus agent and, through a quarantine action and dedicated care, he managed to defeat SARS in short time.
It is therefore significant that the place of culture par excellence, the library of Casa Italia, is dedicated to a man whose life has witnessed the profound friendship between Italy and Vietnam.

The library is open every Thursday from 15:00 to 17:00. For further information, please write to: stage.hanoi@esteri.it .
