Towards “Youth4Climate: Driving Ambition”: meet the Vietnamese delegates.

In 2020 Italy and the United Kingdom partnered to organize the 26th Conference of Parties of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, the COP26.

We are cooperating to reach out to all Countries, especially big emitters, to underline the urgency of more ambitious measures to keep global warming under 1.5 degrees, but also to raise awareness about the importance of this historical challenge.

We deem it crucial to promote the engagement of the young generations in decision-making processes, because what we do now will have an impact on their lives mainly.

In this spirit, Italy looks forward to hosting back-to-back in Milan the Youth4Climate event as well as the Pre-CoP (September 28th – October 2nd, 2021), in order to allow youth representatives to meet the official ministerial delegations and present decisions and proposals.

The aim of the youth event is to channel in positive and constructing ways the youth mobilization that is happening all around, making young people responsible and recognizing them as key players in climate action.

To this end, 361 young climate leaders – 15 to 29 years old – from all around the world have been selected by a special committee and will gather in Milan on September 28.

The two young delegates from Vietnam are Ly Phuong Thanh, 21 years old student at School of Business International University (IU) – Vietnam National University HCMC, and Hoang Ngoc Xuan Mai, 19 years old student at Harvard University – USA.

The Italian Embassy hosted, on September 22 at 9:00 am, an online talk with Thanh and Mai, in order to give the young Vietnamese interested in environmental issues a chance to interact with them before they leave for the Conference in Milan.

It was the occasion to discuss about youth engagement and empowerment for climate action, about Thanh and Mai’s contribution to the conference in Milan, and what they expect to bring back to Vietnam from this experience.

The Ambassadors of Italy and the UK to Vietnam welcomed the participants. Representatives from the Vietnamese Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment and UNDP Vietnam also joined the online talk.

The webinar is available, in both English and Vietnamese, at the following link:
