Italy supports Vietnam with over 800 thousand doses of AstraZeneca vaccine

Italy has pledged to donate 812,060 doses of AstraZeneca vaccine to Vietnam, which will be delivered in the coming weeks through the Global COVAX Facility, the international program coordinated by the United Nations and GAVI to promote universal access and equitable distribution of Covid-19 vaccines.

As affirmed by the Italian President of the Council of Ministers Mario Draghi in a message to the Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, “solidarity and spirit of cooperation have always been cornerstones of Italy’s international action. The Covid-19 pandemic has made more evident than ever the need to adhere to these principles in order to achieve effective and sustainable results on the path to economic, social and health recovery”.

For these reasons, Italy supported the creation of the Global COVAX Facility and is one of its largest financial donors. On the occasion of the Global Health Summit promoted by the Italian Presidency of the G20, our country also committed to donate 15 million doses to some priority countries, including in particular Vietnam.

As an ASEAN development partner, Italy is also among the main donors of the ASEAN Covid-19 Response Fund with a contribution of over 2 million USD.

The Italian contribution reinforces the collective action of the European Union in Vietnam within the framework of the “Team Europe” project.

In the spirit of the strategic partnership and sincere friendship that links the two countries, Italy stands firmly at the side of Vietnam in the fight against Covid-19.
